How does HeatShield work?

HeatShield is very easy to use. Charge it in a freezer; wear it whilst it is still cold; recharge it and use again. The HeatShield vest contains many separate sealed cells of a patented synthetic coolant that solidifies when placed in a freezer (3 to 4 hours in a commercial version; 5 to 6 hours in a domestic one). The sealed cells are configured in four inserts which may be taken out and replaced with fresh frozen ones. Indeed it is possible to freeze the inserts separately from the vest to save space and many people chose to have one or more sets of spare cells to hand. The vest is designed so that, even when solid, it is quite flexible and comfortable to move around in.

Diagram showing the mutiple methods by which HeatShield achieves its cooling effect. Once worn over a T-shirt or similar undergarment (not next to the skin) the cells then begin to absorb heat from the user's body so creating a comfortable temperature gradient from body to coolant. The "synthetic ice" of the coolant is designed to absorb a great deal of body heat, not only because it starts at a low temperature, but also because of the latent heat required to change its phase from solid to liquid.

The multi-cell design generates more benefits than just mobility when frozen. Because each cell is relatively small the vest can contour successfully over different body shapes and sizes. This greatly improves effective heat removal compared to many competing products.

And HeatShield uses other cooling methods too - as can be seen from the diagram on the left. Incoming infrared radiation is reflected and, whilst perspiration is wicked away from the user's body for comfort, it is also evaporated off the vest which then cools through a futher liquid / gas phase change. In all a smart design engineered into a high quality and very robust finished product fit for the toughest of jobs.
